Meta History
A chronological journey through the grand evolution of the Standard format.
The Wild West (1995-1998)
The dawn of the format (originally called Type 2). This era was defined by drastic power imbalances. Black Summer (Necropotence) gave way to Combo Winter (Tolarian Academy), leading to massive bans and a fundamental rethinking of card design and set rotations.
The Golden Age (2000-2005)
Often heralded as the pinnacle of Standard. Multi-color strategies bloomed with Invasion, tribal themes shined in Onslaught, and the original Ravnica block provided a perfectly balanced environment where Aggro, Control, and Combo coexisted peacefully (aside from the Affinity blip in Mirrodin).
The Planeswalker Era (2008-2015)
The introduction of Planeswalkers changed the game fundamentally. Threats became sticky, value engines became standalone, and "Midrange" became the dominant macro-archetype. Jace, the Mind Sculptor defined this era, alongside formidable titans and high-value creatures like Siege Rhino.
The F.I.R.E. Paradigm (2019-Present)
Wizards pushed the power envelope dramatically. Cards became hyper-efficient, generating immediate value upon entering the battlefield. Legendary threats like Oko, Thief of Crowns and Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath necessitated aggressive ban lists to constantly stabilize the format.
